THE SUNDEEP BATAVIA TOURNAMENT – AN OVERVIEW

 

The six year legacy of the Sundeep Batavia Tournament – cricket and basketball, came alive once again as a trial of skill of able sportsmen as the seventh season of the tournament came alive on the grounds of DPS Sharjah.

You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world but if they don’t play together the club won’t be worth a dime - goes a famous quote, and this statement came alive during the Sundeep Batavia Tournament organized by DPS Sharjah during 27 Oct to 2 Nov 2010.

The inaugural day programme saw a scintillating performance by 360 boys rocking everyone to the beats of “We will rock you…” on the green fields. A deep sense of loyalty, belonging and trust was prominent among all gathered in the field.

With the meet declared open by Mr. Batavia, the skills of the 25 teams registered for the boys’ and girls’ basketball tournament and the 12 teams for the cricket tournament was set on roll.

 

DPS Sharjah teams Win Titles

DPS Sharjah Girls made a wonderfully spectacular show of victory in the finals of the DPS International Interschool Basketball Tournament for Girls.

The Cricket Team too boosted the glory of the school with its spectacular achievements, show of talent and skill.

 

 

Dps Sharjah teams excel

DPS Sharjah Basketball & Cricket teams retained the titles of Fifth International Interschool Basketball tournament for Girls Under-19 as well the Seventh Interschool Sundeep Batavia Memorial Cricket Tournament for Under-12 boys. In the boys’ basketball finals, St Mary’s School Dubai lifted the trophy by defeating NIMS Sharjah in an exciting match.

 

DPS Sharjah girls retain Basketball title

The defending champion, DPS Sharjah girls outplayed Our Own English High School Dubai 61-34 in the fifth international interschool Basketball tournament for Under-19 girls. DPS Sharjah girls dominated the match with a clear score difference throughout the quarters. In the first quarter DPS girls scored 13 points against 7 as well as 18- 8, 16-11 and 14 -8 in the second, third and fourth quarters respectively.

Jennet Johny, team captain displayed excellence in the field and scored the bulk of the baskets for the winners with 23 points. Juliet Johny 11, Najad Abdul Wahab and Joan Ann Varughese scored 10 points each for DPS.  Anitha Tresa Anto and Isna Ismail and Nandini Singh scored 11 and 9 points each for the losers.

 

Basketball (boys) - St Mary’s Dubai win the finals

In a neck to neck match, St Mary’s Dubai outplayed NIMS Sharjah 54-48 and lifted the trophy in the fifth international interschool basketball tournament for Under-19 boys. St Mary’s boys dominated both in defensive and offensive. Victor Emeka excelled in rebounding and interception, Austin Paul in dribbling and distribution, Laurance Justin in scoring and creating opportunities. Justin 14, Victor and Austin scored 12 each for the winners. Meanwhile Ali Sali demonstrated outstanding performance by scoring the bulk of the baskets for NIMS Sharjah and Muneer Mohammed contributed with 10 points.

 

Cricket U12 boys: DPS Sharjahs retain title

Defending champion DPS Sharjah retained the championship by defeating Dubai Modern High school by 21 runs in the Seventh interschool Sundeep Batavia Memorial Cricket tournament for Under-12 boys. Dubai Modern High won the toss and opted to field. DPS boys scored 90 runs for 5 wickets from the allotted 15 overs and managed to abridge Dubai Modern High’s 69 runs for 9 wickets in 15 overs. Zohaib scored 24 runs from 19 balls and Sparsh scored an unbeaten 18 runs from 24 balls for DPS. Meantime Taran and Aditiya scored 13 runs each and Saahil 12 runs for Modern High. Abhishek of DPS was declared the man of the match with an outstanding achievement - 3 wickets from 3 overs by conceding 7 runs.
Best batsman of the tournament was awarded to Chirag Thakur of DPS Sharjah and the best all-rounder of the tournament has been awarded to Keith Pinto of IHS Dubai (both of them bagged Air India Tickets).
Man of the match: Abhishek of DPS Sharjah and the best fielder - Taran of Dubai Modern high.

In the basketball boys, Victor Emmaka of St Mary’s has been adjudged as the most valuable player and Ali Sali of NIMS Sharjah as most valuable player of the final match (both bagged Air Arabia tickets). Laurance Justin was declared the most promising player of the tournament.
In the Girls basketball match, Joann Ann Varghese of DPS Sharjah and Jennet Johny of DPS Sharjah has been adjudged as the most valuable player and the player of the final match respectively (both of them bagged Air India Tickets). Humaira Tasneem of DPS Sharjah was declared as the most promising player of the tournament.  

The chief guests Mrs & Mr. Batavia gave away the trophies and prizes to the winners. M/S Sharjah cement, Petrofac, Union of Comoros, Air India, Air Arabia, Iffco and Nadec Dairies were the primary sponsors and supporters of this Mega International event.

Thus came to a fitting finale, skill, zest and play contributing to a feeling of true sportsmanship among all involved in the tournament.
